Fall Festival Game Idea - Feed the Squirrel Acorn Toss Game

FEED THE SQUIRREL - SETUP & DIRECTIONS

Supplies for this Fall Festival Game:

Empty 4-gallon water jug
White poster board
Brown butcher paper
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks (for adults, of course)
Sharpie type marker
Additional poster board for the head, ears, paws and tail
Oversized googly eyes (sold below)
Medium sized bale of hay (sold below)
Jingle Bell Acorns (sold below)
Medium sized pail

Make the DIY Squirrel

Begin with an empty 4-gallon water jug. Keep it empty while constructing the squirrel so it remains easy to handle.
Use a hot glue gun to attach white poster board around the jug. This firm first layer gives the squirrel’s body structure and durability.
Cover the white poster board with brown butcher paper, attaching it with hot glue. The brown paper creates the squirrel’s finished appearance, but it is not sturdy enough to use by itself.
Cut the squirrel’s head, ears, paws and tail from poster board. Cover those pieces with brown paper as needed before attaching them.
Add the oversized googly eyes, then draw the nose, mouth and outline the ears.
Take the finished squirrel to the game location and place it behind a bale of hay.
Once it is in position, add several inches of water to the bottom of the jug to help keep it stable.
Arrange the squirrel’s paws around the bucket so it appears to be holding the target.

How to Play

Give each player three jingle bell acorns.
The player stands behind the designated throwing line and tosses the acorns one at a time toward the squirrel’s galvanized pail.
An acorn only counts if it stays inside the pail. Because both the acorns and pail are metal, an acorn may land inside and unexpectedly bounce back out!
Award prizes based on the number of acorns remaining in the pail after all three tosses.

Additional Hints & Tips:

The large pail makes this fall carnival game look easy—but don’t be fooled! The metal jingle bell acorns can bounce unpredictably when they hit the galvanized pail. A toss only counts when the acorn stays in the bucket.
